SummerServe Internship FAQ’s

  • What is the age range for SummerServe? 

    • We accept applicants between the ages of 16-25. 

  • What is the difference between a House Build Intern and a Youth Camp Intern? 

    • You have the opportunity to choose between two intern focuses this year! All interns should be flexible in duty assignments, because intern responsibilities overlap. However, here are the main descriptions: 

    • House Build Interns: These interns mainly focus on assisting groups on house builds. They may work as foreman, co-foreman, staff of site, etc. They will also assist in toolbox maintenance. 

    • Youth Camp Intern: These interns will focus on planning and leading the activities for the 2 weeks of overnight youth camps. If time allows, these interns will plan and lead activities for local children on non-youth camp weeks. The ability to speak Spanish is not required but is extremely beneficial. 

  • What does a typical day look like as an intern? 

    • The daily schedule changes but generally starts at 7:00 with intern meeting then transitions into set up for group, breakfast, group devotions, and everyone leaving for the day’s activities. Each intern will be assigned to specific roles throughout the week such as staff of site, foreman, activity director, etc. 

    • The evenings generally include some fun activities or tours after dinner. Interns may be assigned to certain tasks. 

  • What does a typical week look like? 

    • The week structure changes depending on events happening that week, but in general it includes: 

    • Sunday (evening): Group arrival 

    • Monday- Thursday: House Building and/ or Youth Camp 

    • Friday: Group rest and fun day 

    • Saturday: Group leaves early in the morning. 

  • Will I receive any training? 

    • Yes! Most of it is on the job training; however, we will have a short training session before you arrive and tool training when you arrive onsite. Any skills you will need, we will teach you! 

  • Where will I be staying? 

    • You will be staying at the UReach Global base near San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico. You will be rooming with the other interns and staff. Our base includes modern amenities such as flushing toilets and showers. 

  • What do I eat? 

    • Breakfast and dinner are generally eaten at the base, while lunch is usually sandwiches at the house build site. However, this area has the best tacos, fish/ shrimp tacos, and some great cafes… so be sure to have extra money to spend on local food. 

  • Do I need to speak Spanish? 

    • Nope! Being bilingual is a huge benefit, but not required! We will have translators on site, and you will pick up Spanish vocab as you work here. 

  • Do I need to have a certain belief system? 

    • You do not have to be committed to any specific belief system to be an intern; however, you need to be aware that daily intern devotionals and group devotionals are part of the program. Everything we do in this area as we fight to bring people out of poverty, is all a reflection of the love we have experienced through salvation from Christ Jesus. Spreading the love of God is our primary goal. 

  • Do I need construction experience? 

    • No! As mentioned above: any skills you will need, we will teach you! 

  • What should I pack?

  • Is Mexico safe? 

    • Please look at the safety information outlined on the UReach Website. We can never make blanket safety statements; however, we have over 800 people coming this summer and  

  • Do I need a passport? 

    • Yes, you need a passport to get in and out of Mexico.
